Painted Bunting (Kimble County)

Favorite Parks/Wild Areas:

Balcones Canyonlands

Balcones Canyonlands is a National Wildlife refuge that provides a great opportunity to see many species of birds in the Hill Country.  It is home to the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and the recovered Black-capped Vireo.   The refuge and website provide several resources to birders, including a handy guide/checklist for birding there.

Kickapoo Caverns State Park

Located north of Brackettville and south of Rocksprings, Kickapoo Caverns Sate Park is pretty remote for a Texas Hill Country birding area.  The park boasts that around 240 different bird species fly through Kickapoo Caverns State Park from time to time.  The park also offers binoculars that park patrons can borrow.


South Llano River State Park

This is one of the best birding locations in the Hill County of Texas.  More than 250 species of birds can be seen in the park, including Golden-cheecked Warblers, Varied Bunting, and Painted Bunting.  The park offers bird blinds to use and provides this great guide/checklist for birding in the park.



Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory

Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory is an old waste water treatment facility and surrounding area.  It is home to many species of birds, and the city of Austin has allowed birders access to the area.  Experienced birders should be able to find at least 50 species of birds on any given day.  The website provides a great checklist for birders to use.



Lost Maples State Natural Area

Lost Maples is known for colorful leaf changes in the fall, but it should also be known for colorful bird viewing.  Green Kingfisher, Golden-cheeked Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, are all touted as residents of Lost Maples.  The guide/checklist also provides info for Birding at Lost Maples.
