Backyard Birds: Make Your Own Hummingbird Nectar

Make Your Own Hummingbird Nectar

Black-chinned Hummingbird

Although you can, there really is no reason to buy nectar to fill your hummingbird feeders.  Making your own is inexpensive and easy.  Here is all you need to know:

1) Mix 4 parts water with 1 part sugar.  Nothing else.
  • Only use refined white sugar.
    • Do not use: powdered sugar, confectioners sugar, honey, corn syrup, or anything else
  • You DO NOT have to boil the water.  Just make sure the sugar completely dissolves in the water.
    • You can boil the water first, but do not add the sugar to the cooking/boiling water.  This could burn the sugar.
    • If you do boil the water, make sure it cools before you add it to your feeder.
  • DO NOT USE FOOD COLORING
    • Food coloring could potentially be harmful to hummingbirds.
    • Food coloring is not necessary to attract hummingbirds.
  • 4 parts water and 1 part sugar can be the following:
    • 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar
    • 2 cups of water and 1/2 cup of sugar
    • 4 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar.

2) Be sure to change your nectar and clean your feeder regularly.
  • Change the nectar every 2-4 days.

    • Nectar can ferment, and be unhealthy (and dangerous) for hummingbirds
    • The warmer the weather the sooner your nectar should be changed.
    • Clean your feeder once a week.
    • Mold can grow on the feeder, which can harm the birds.
